Currently the physicians of Advanced Orthopedics & Sports Medicine are proud to provide medical coverage for several academic and professional athletic organizations.
Drs. Kraushaar, Fond and Popowitz have the highest level of training possible in the field of Sports Medicine. They have been fellowship trained at the Georgetown University and Stanford University Orthopedic Sports Medicine programs. The doctors have worked with professional teams, including the Washington Redskins, San Francisco Giants, and the D.C. United Soccer Team. They have treated professional tennis players and other such high-demand athletes.
The most valuable distinction gained by being fellowship-trained in sports medicine is our doctors' understanding of the needs of the athlete. It is well-known that physical rehabilitation can make or break the outcome of an athlete's injury. This is true whether or not surgery is done. Our doctors regularly speak to physical therapists, trainers and coaches about our athlete patients. We know how to get the athlete back into action as soon as it is safe.
In the operating room, Drs. Kraushaar, Fond and Popowitz are masters of orthopedic sports medicine techniques. The surgeons have the most advanced hand-skills and decision making guidelines available. We use minimally invasive techniques such as arthroscopy to accomplish repairs that used to require large incisions. We are refined in the most challenging procedures and we use the newest, most evolved equipment to get the job done right. In some cases, we are the first surgeons ever performing a particular procedure at our hospital. Nearly all of our sports medicine surgery patients go home on the same day as the surgery. Our surgical repairs are generally designed with rapid rehabilitation in mind.
As the injured athlete returns to sport, our physicians are valuable advisors. We have guidelines for returning to running, throwing, swinging sports, swimming, and specialty concerns. Our experienced advice during the transition back to sport is what helps the athlete return to their best possible level of play.
